Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't speak Spanish?

Parents do not need to speak Spanish for their children to succeed in the Dual Immersion program. English speaking parents can still help by reading with their children in English, listening to their children read in Spanish and helping them develop the thought processes that are necessary for math, science and essay writing etc.. One of the nice benefits for DI parents is that through listening to and helping their child, they end up learning or improving their own Spanish. The Dual Immersion Advisory (DIA) also organizes parent Spanish classes for those who are interested.

What is the typical experience for an English speaking child upon first entering the dual immersion program?

There is an initial adjustment period for children when they first enter the program—"why is this teacher speaking to me in a language I can't understand?!" A combination of predictable, routine, fun activities, lots of singing, skillful sign language, and new friends help the children feel comfortable and competent in the Dual Immersion environment. Very quickly the children begin to develop their Spanish vocabulary and understand much of what is said.

Will there be a middle school dual immersion option?

The district is currently evaluation extending the DI program through middle school. There is currently a group of teachers, parents and district representatives who are researching and evaluating the DI middle school options. At this time, students have the option to take advanced Spanish as an elective.
